Through the Mists was written in 1898 by the author (known to us as Fred) who resided in London, England. He grew up with a brother, sister and father who was a wealthy strict Calvinist and elder of the Presbyterian Church. He never knew his mother. She died giving him birth and his family refused to speak to him about her. He was truly alone.
Fred was a religious person but was unwilling to attend orthodox church due to receiving bad experiences there as a child. He felt he could do a greater good solving his problems by reading and studying the Bible and trusting in the leniency and justice of a righteous God. He made an honest endevour to do His will according to the light within him. This led him to the East of London where, in those days, vice, poverty and wretchedness most abound. He found his life's work in helping to teach these poor down-trodden human beings the glory of God.
