AND THERE'S MORE:
NOW THEY ALL HAVE A GPS VERSION TOO !
Before giving you the details, and perhaps to show off just a little bit: lets compare the 'best' locally available map (made by one of the most famous Ladakhi trekking guides), the US famous U502 series topo, and our map.
First, the 'local' map, of wich the author acknowledges himself: "only the placenames are reliable, the paths and roads need major corrections."
So, what about the US intelligence maps? The righteously famous U502 series (sometimes). Well, MUCH better, that's for sure:
Oh man, this LOOKS much better. The rivers are more complete, and it also shows two river crossings, although the one at Darbuk is now south of the village, not north of it. And after the 2nd bridge there's a road alright going to Shyok. But, have a look at the REAL situation.
our own map (contour info omitted for clarity):
See the difference: the first bridge is WAY more south (in fact, just off te map, south of Punpun), and the second bridge is WAY more to the west (yes, that's to the left).
Be honest with yourself: which of these 3 maps would YOU like to have in your hands when traveling through that area?
Often I'm asked WHY are your maps so good? Well, for GPS navigation, you just have to be INCREDIBLY accurate. There's no room for sloppy work. It's as simple as that.
Now, you might try to take it off Google Earth or so. Well, good luck to you: their map overlay for these regions is either totally absent, or it sucks! And ever tried to put a sat image on your GPS device (that is IF there's a good coverage of the area, and IF you get it calibrated accurately)? Well, I assure you, once on the road, you'll see next to nothing on your screen, particularly in full sunshine. Remember, there's not much shade in Ladakh. You NEED an accurate and contrast-rich map, nothing less will do.
I don't want to waste your time. If you're convinced about the quality, you can go straight to the order page:
I know, it's dirt cheap, but it's just enough to finance my next trips. I travel very modestly.
